American Whitewater Expeditions private campground is situated within the 30 acres of American River Resort in the beautiful Coloma Valley. Our biggest asset is our campground location. All campsites are within a 5 minute easy walk to James Marshall Gold Discovery Park. James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River in the valley the Nisenan Indians knew as Cullumah. This event led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere and was the spark that ignited the spectacular growth of the West during the ensuing decades. The gold discovery site, located in the still visible tailrace of Sutter’s sawmill, in present day Coloma, California is one of the most significant historic sites in the nation. Spend hours exploring historical sites, museum and hike along beautiful trails thoughout the park.
Our deluxe campground sits on a rise along the river just above Troublemaker Rapid on the South Fork of the American River. To make your stay with us as comfortable as possible there are FREE hot showers and newly renovated indoor restroom facilities just like at home, a swimming pool, a fishing pond stocked with bass and trout, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, flat grass-covered campsites with picnic tables and much more.

CAMPING EQUIPMENT RENTALS
If you are not a seasoned camper then we have all the equipment available to make your stay comfortable. All rentals must be reserved prior to your river trip. Rentals at the camp are subject to availability. American Whitewater staff will make sure that your tent is set up and ready for you before you arrive!
Our spacious 4 person tents are ideal for 3 adults or 4 kids as well as their bags. They have lots of ventilation and a sturdy floor, storage pockets and a excellent rain fly in the unlikely event of rain in the summer. Our tents are in excellent condition and almost always only a season old. We use Coleman and Alps Tents. All tent rentals come with thick foam sleeping pads.

Our spacious Cabin tents are ideal for 8 adults on pads or 4 Cots to keep you off the ground. They have 2 large doors and adults can easily stand up and walk around inside. There is lots of ventilation windows and a sturdy floor, storage pockets and a excellent rain fly in the unlikely event of rain in the summer. All tent rentals come with thick foam sleeping pads.

What you sleep on can make or break a camping trip. We spent years trying out everything from air mattresses to various density foam. We finally settled on a nice 2 inch thick medium density foam mattress. The foam pads are covered by a thick codura cover in a pillow style. These foam pads are always free to have for the night if you are renting tents with us.
If sleeping on the ground in a tent is not your thing then rent a cot. These comfy cots keep you well raised above the ground and can be added to cabin tents only. We only have single cots available at present.
