Choosing the right trip for your party
is essential to enjoying any whitewater experience. With that in mind, American
Whitewater employs the following basic distinction between the Forks of the
American River: Class III, Class IV, and Class V. If, after reading the

- Ages: 6 and up
- Novice to Intermediate
- Moderate Physical Activity
Class III
South Fork of the American: medium
whitewater. Exciting and challenging but not overwhelming. Perfect for novices,
youths ages 6 and up, as well as experienced rafters.

- Ages: 14 and up
- Intermediate
- Moderate Physical Activity
Great choice for adventurous kids and
adults. Rapids are Class III-IV with swift currents and bigger drops. These
trips require active paddling. The Middle Fork of the American is your
choice for a Class IV whitewater rafting trip.
Class IV
Middle Fork of the American:
medium to difficult whitewater; more action, more intricate maneuvers. Okay for
novices in good physical condition and ready for a long day on the water.

- Advanced
- Vigorous Physical Activity
Class V
The North Fork of the American, or
the Futaleufu River. Medium to very difficult
whitewater; bigger drops, constant maneuvering, lots of action. Prior rafting
experience a good idea.
Best for enthusiastic rafters seeking
maximum excitement. Rapids are Class V with steep, technical drops and long,
fast wave trains. The North Fork of the
American River is one of the premier rafting trips in the state of
California.
