River Classifications

Choosing the right trip for your party is essential to enjoying any whitewater rafting experience. With that in mind, American Whitewater Expeditions employs the following basic distinction between the Forks of the American River: Class III, Class IV, and Class V. Class III – Beginner Rafter
Class IV – Intermediate
Class V – Advanced

The three forks of the American River offer up some great whitewater rafting no matter what your experience or thrill threshold! The South Fork of the American is a Class III rated river perfect for families and first time rafters, while the Middle Fork of the American boasts 18 miles of gorgeous scenery mixed with Class II to Class IV rapids. The North Fork of the American is our wild and scenic river fed by the spring runoff only and its Class V rapids are sure to get any adventurers attention!
